THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team was locked in a 1-1 tie with Northwestern State through four innings on Sunday afternoon, but the Demons put together a four-run fifth and held on to complete a three-game sweep of the Colonels with a 6-3 victory at Ray E. Didier Field.
Despite the loss, Nicholls scored a major win in the community as the Colonels raised $2,225 in a silent auction for Upside Downs, an organization committed to serving the Down Syndrome community through new parents support, recreational activities, raising awareness and advocating for a brighter future.
After falling behind, 1-0, in the first inning, Nicholls (22-30, 11-16 SLC) tied things up with an
Alex Tucker single up the middle that drove in
Alex Shermer.
Northwestern State (30-21, 17-10 SLC) blew things open in the fifth, converting four singles, a double, a ground out and a sac fly into four runs to take a 5-1 lead.
The Demons added a run in the eighth before the Colonels responded with a run in the bottom of the frame.

Trevor Flynn single to left field, coupled with a Northwestern State fielding error allowed
Kyle Reese to score, but Nicholls would come no closer.
Reese led the Colonels offensively, batting 2-for-4 with a run scored. Tucker hit 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Holt finished 2-for-5 with a run. Shermer went 1-for-4 with a run scored and
Kyle Knauth turned in a 2-for-4 outing at the plate.
Four Demons registered multi-hit outings in a complete team win. Six Northwestern State players scored and six drove in a run.
Alex Ernestine (3-5) took the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits with five strikeouts through four innings on the mound.
Evan Tidwell (5-3) picked up the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits, while fanning two batters through seven innings of work.
The Colonels will next face Tulane at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Big Easy. Nicholls will then battle New Orleans in an away-home-away series set to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday.
