THIBODAUX, La. – After a disappointing season-opening weekend at the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, the Nicholls State University volleyball team will look to rebound at home as the squad hosts Southern at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Stopher Gym.
The Colonels (0-3) led two sets to one against the host Bulldogs in their first match of the 2016 season, but Samford fought back to take a 3-2 match victory. Nicholls dropped consecutive 3-0 decisions against South Alabama and Indiana State to conclude the tournament.
The Jaguars (1-1) split their opening weekend double-header with Southeastern La. Southern suffered a 3-1 loss to the Lions in game one, but earned a 3-1 victory in game two.
Kaci Eaton (19 kills),
Emily Weimer (19 kills) and
Stephanie Tobison (19 kills) lead the Colonel offense.
Ainsley Marroccoli has a team-high 51 assists, while
Lucija Barac is second on the team with 26. Eaton paces the squad with 32 digs, followed by Weimer with 30. Weimer leads Nicholls with 11 blocks, while Barac has a team-leading five service aces.
Arabella Hall (20 kills), Vaterra Calais (43 assists) and Diamond Williams (38 digs) spearhead the Jaguars' attack.
The Colonels will next head to Lafayette for the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic. Nicholls will face Air Force (1:30 p.m.) and Alabama A&M (4 p.m.) on Friday, before battling Louisiana-Lafayette (3 p.m.) on Saturday.
