THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team came out hot and never trailed in their home opener against Southern on Wednesday, cruising to a 3-0 victory in Stopher Gym.
HOW IT WAS WON
The Colonels (1-3) scored the first six points of the night and forced an early timeout by the Jaguars (1-2), but the stoppage had little effect on Nicholls as the team quickly pulled out to a 14-4 lead. Southern fought back, trading points with the Colonels over the remainder of the set, but Nicholls closed things out, 25-13.
With momentum clearly on their side, the Colonels jumped out to a 10-2 advantage early in set two, before rolling to a 25-15 victory.
The Jaguars put up a valiant effort in the final set, but Nicholls closed out the match with a 25-17 win.
Five Colonels totaled at least five kills in a balanced offensive attack, headlined by
Stephanie Tobison, who finished with seven kills and five digs on the night.
Alexa Perry paced the squad with 13 digs, while
Ainsley Marroccoli totaled 18 assists and a team-high three service aces.
Kaci Eaton and
Emily Weimer each had a pair of blocks to lead Nicholls.
Melodie Malone (six kills), Diamond Williams (13 digs) and Vaterra Calais (10 assists) spearheaded the Southern attack.
UP NEXT
The Colonels will next head to Lafayette for the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic. Nicholls will face Air Force (1:30 p.m.) and Alabama A&M (4 p.m.) on Friday, before closing out the weekend against Louisiana-Lafayette (3 p.m.) on Saturday.
