THIBODAUX, La. – Coming off its first victory of the young season, the Nicholls State University volleyball team will make the trek to Louisiana-Lafayette for three contests in the 2016 Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic, starting Friday afternoon.
The tournament will take place in Earl K. Long Gym. Nicholls (1-3) opens up at 1:30 p.m. against Air Force (2-1) before taking on Alabama A&M (1-3) at 4 p.m. The Colonels will then play the host Ragin' Cajuns (0-4) on Saturday at 3 p.m. Live stats for all three games will be available, and a live video stream of Saturday's game can be purchased for a small fee.
Nicholls claimed
Tommy Harold's first win of the year with a dominating 3-0 decision over Southern in the Colonels' home opener Wednesday night. The team registered 11 aces in the three-setter, led by five from
Ainsley Marroccoli. The offense finished with a .295 hitting percentage, while holding Southern, which was coming a big win over Southeastern Louisiana, to a .033 clip.
Four Colonels have 20 or more kills for the season, led by
Kaci Eaton and
Stephanie Tobison with 26 apiece.
Emily Weimer has 24 kills and former Ragin' Cajun Brienna Hill has 20. Hill posted an early season-high of six in the win over Southern.
Air Force opened its slate in the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic at home, picking up 3-2 wins over Jacksonville State and Montana State, but came up short against Grand Canyon by the same score. Abigail Miksch and Elizabeth Pennington were named to the all-tournament as the duo combined for over 120 kills in the Falcons' 15 sets.
Alabama A&M was blanked in its three losses, but earned a 3-2 win over North Carolina A&T. Ashundria McNeal has been the squad's best attacker as she has 40 kills on the year.
Louisiana-Lafayette enters the tournament searching for its first win of the year. The Ragin' Cajuns took part in the Marriot Houston Westchase Classic and were defeated by host Houston, Houston Baptist and Weber State. ULL took on another Southland opponent, Northwestern State, on Tuesday and was handed a 3-2 loss. Stacey Reilly leads the team with 67 kills, followed by Chanelle Gardner with 51.
