HUNTSVILLE, Texas –
Cassidy Barrios and
Tykeria Williams scored 18 points each and the Nicholls State University women's basketball team picked up a 66-59 win on the road at Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
With the victory, Nicholls improved to 5-9 overall and 2-1 in Southland play. Sam Houston State remained winless on the season at 0-13 and 0-3.
Barrios and Williams had big second halves for the Colonels, scoring 14 and 11 points respectively to keep Nicholls out in front. Nicholls trailed 13-11 at the end of the first but headed into the break with a 32-27 advantage.
The duo teamed up with
Emani White, who scored 11 points in the first half, for nine of the Colonels' 10 3-pointers. Nicholls shot at a 40 percent clip for the game, firing up 25 from long range.
The 3-ball played a big part in the opening minutes of the third as Nicholls hit three to take a 42-29 lead. But Sam Houston eventually trimmed the deficit to three points in the quarter before
Taylor Morrison hit a runner to close out the quarter.
In the fourth, a basket-and-one by Barrios sparked a 7-0 run for Nicholls to push its lead to 58-47 and the Colonels went on to pick up the win.
A total of four Colonels reached double figures with White adding 13 points and Morrison finishing with 11. Barrios had an outstanding all-around game, making 6 of 9 from the field, had six rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Sam Houston was led by Jennifer Oramas who scored a game-high 18 points.
