THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University soccer team needs a win in its match against Southeastern Louisiana University Friday at the Nicholls Soccer Complex to solidify the eighth seed in the Southland Conference Tournament.
The match, commencing at 3 p.m., brings about two scenarios where the Colonels (6-10-1, 3-6-1 SLC) make postseason play. As stated above, Nicholls will take the final seed should it win tomorrow. A draw would require Texas A&M – Corpus Christi to draw or lose for the same result. The Colonels are eliminated from tournament contention with a loss.
"We're thrilled to close out the regular season at home with so much at stake," head coach
Mac McBride said. "This will be the third season in succession we take on Southeastern with a tournament berth to play for. The players are determined to make this a 'third time's a charm' match."
Redshirt senior
Kirstie Champagne put Nicholls in this advantageous position with her overtime golden goal against Northwestern State on Sunday. Champagne followed her penalty kick to give the Colonels a 1-0 victory.
Behind sophomore
Roosa Hurmerinta's 4.9 saves per match, Nicholls is tied with Houston Baptist for the league lead with 110 saves. Junior midfielder
Haylee Atwell spearheads the Colonels offense with four goals while Champagne, fellow senior
Emily Werenskiold and junior
Francesca Curteis have all contributed two assists.
The Lady Lions (4-10-3, 2-6-2 SLC) suffered a 1-0 defeat to UCA Sunday despite outshooting the Sugar Bears 17-15.
Southeastern's Maggie Ramsey has produced a team-high four goals, eight points and 51 shots, including 28 on goal. Lady Lions goalie Michaela Hawthorn ranks 10th in the nation with 108 saves.
