THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball squad is prepped for its home opener Friday against Spring Hill at Stopher Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.

The Colonels (1-1) fell 113-77 against No. 5 Villanova at the Wells Fargo Center Tuesday despite a game-high 25 points from junior guard Zaquavian Smith. Smith knocked down 6-of-9 treys and all five free throws during his scoring barrage. The Statesboro, Georgia, native recorded Nicholls' fifth straight 20-point scoring performance dating back to last season.

Senior guards Roddy Peters and Tevon Saddler added 17 and 15 points, respectively. Peters has a team-high 18.0 points per game, leading a pack of five Colonels in double figures. Newcomers have accounted for 75.5 percent (142-188) of scoring for the red and gray.

Nicholls has drained 11.5 threes per contest, and senior center Legend Robertin has five blocks through two games (2.5 bpg). Both of those marks top the Southland.

The Badgers, a Division II team, have a 1-1 record and face Pensacola Christian Thursday. SHC dropped its season opener to Union (Tenn.) before picking up a victory over Shorter. Junior Brandon Fischer is the team's leading scorer (16.0 ppg) and neared a double-double (19 points, eight rebounds) in the Badgers' win over the Hawks.
