THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University volleyball team tied a season high with 10 blocks but fell to Southeastern Louisiana University in four sets (25-22, 25-12, 20-25, 29-27) Thursday night at Stopher Gym.
Freshman
Imanie Williams totaled a team-high 14 kills. Seniors
Sydney Lerille and
Stephanie Tobison produced 12 kills apiece as Tobison also tallied 13 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.
The Lady Lions (3-24, 1-12 SLC) picked up their first league win behind Elyssa Purcell (17 kills) and Savannah Alcazar (14 kills). Libero Lexie Torres contributed a match-high 21 digs.
Tied at 20 in the opening frame, SLU attacker Tempestt Vaughn fired a kill and a Colonels (4-22, 2-11 SLC) attacking error gave the Lady Lions a 22-20 edge. The two sides traded points twice before an Alcazar kill closed the set.
SLU dominated the second set by swinging .737 (15-1-19) en route to a 25-12 victory. Purcell went a perfect 6-for-6 in the period.
Nicholls bounced back in the third set, utilizing two early Tobison kills to turn a 4-3 deficit into an 8-4 lead. After the ninth tie at 20-20, The Colonels tallied the next five points capped by three consecutive kills from Williams.
Nicholls erased a nine-point margin in the deciding set. After falling behind 14-5, the Colonels made a 17-8 run to tie the frame at 22. The Lady Lions saved three set points before an assisted block and kill by Purcell ended the contest at 29-27.
Nicholls returns to action in its final home match of the regular season Saturday. First serve is set for noon.
