Colonels head to LSU for Tuesday night matchup

THIBODAUX, La. — The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will play its first of three marquee nonconference matchups as the Colonels head to Baton Rouge for a contest against LSU Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Maravich Center.

Nicholls (1-2) and LSU (1-2) have identical records after three games, with the Colonels picking up a win over Division II Spring Hill. The Tigers' lone win of the year was an 84-56 win against Southland-member Southeastern Louisiana.

The meeting is the 12th all-time between the programs. LSU has won each matchup, including an 88-35 victory in Thibodaux in 2010 which featured Nicholls head coach DoBee Plaisance squaring off against her daughter, Theresa.

The two Colonel losses this season have been single-digit against quality opponents – SMU and Jacksonville. Nicholls led for most of the game at SMU before dropping the opener, but the setback against Jacksonville was a different story as the Colonels rallied late to make it a two-possession game. Against Spring Hill, Nicholls never trailed in the contest for the home-opening win.

So far this season, guard Cassidy Barrios has carried the team by averaging 20.3 points and 12.7 rebounds. She had an outstanding second-half in the Colonels' last game, scoring 29 of her career-high 33 points and finished with 10 rebounds, six steals, three assists and two blocks. The performance marked her third double-double in as many games this season.

The Colonels are averaging 5.3 made 3-pointers a game, but have yet to find their stroke from outside. Nicholls has connected on just 26 percent behind the arc on 62 attempts.

LSU is headed by Raigyne Louis and Chloe Jackson, who combine for 31 points a night. Louis was an All-SEC selection last season and named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Jackson posted a big game against SLU, totaling 18 points on 9 of 17 shooting.

Fans making the trip can receive a discounted ticket for only $2 with the donation of a non-perishable food item.

The game will be streamed live on SEC Network Plus. The LSU Sports Radio Network will carry the matchup on 107.3 FM.
