Colonels fall in Mardi Gras Invitational to Hofstra, 10-3

THIBODAUX, La.  – The Nicholls State University baseball team did not have the start it hoped for in the inaugural Mardi Gras Invitational: Beads and Baseball on the Bayou presented by Bayou Lafourche Area and Visitors Bureau as the Colonels fell behind Hofstra early and went on to take a 10-3 loss Thursday night at Ray E. Didier Field.

The Pride (1-3) belted 18 hits while Nicholls (2-3) was held without one until Gavin Wehby led off the seventh with one of his two hits on the night. Hofstra's pitching limited Nicholls to four hits and three eighth-inning runs.

Bryan Taylor took the loss in his first career starting allowing three earned runs on four hits in two innings of work. His counterpart, John Rooney, threw five hitless innings before giving way to the bullpen.

Hofstra built a 9-0 lead through seven innings before Nicholls scored its only runs of the game in the eighth. The Colonels loaded the bases and plated a run on a RBI groundout by pinch hitter Lee Clark. Wehby then came through with a 2-run double to make the score 9-3.

Hofstra was led by Nick Bottari with four hits and Mikey Riesner had two hits, including a 3-run shot in the seventh.
