Colonels sweep Brown with 3-1 victory in finale

THIBODAUX, La. – Chet Niehaus went 4-for-4 with an RBI, Gavin Wehby drove in two and the Nicholls State University baseball pitching staff put together an outstanding effort as the Colonels earned a series sweep against Brown University with a 3-1 victory Sunday at Ray E. Didier Field.

The win gives Nicholls (7-4) its third straight victory as the Colonels head into conference play next weekend at Northwestern State. Brown, out of the Ivy League, fell to 0-3 on the season.

Mike Hanchar (2-0) made the start for the Colonels and pitched 5.1 innings with five strikeouts and an unearned run. Daniel Goff allowed two hits and two innings and Jerrad Scott picked up the save after striking out four batters in 1.2 innings.

Nicholls took the lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by Wehby. Ethan Valdez and Niehaus singled in the inning, and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Wehby sent a fly ball deep to left field, allowing Valdez to score on the play.

In the fifth, both teams scored a run with the Bears taking advantage of an error by Gage Teer to knot the game at 1-1. Nicholls answered on an RBI groundout by Wehby, which was setup by base hits from Morales and Niehaus.

Niehause completed his 4-hit day in the seventh with a base hit to right, driving home Troy Cahill from second. Scott closed out the game in his second appearance of the season, striking out four of the five batters he faced.

Teer and Morales joined Niehaus with multi-hits as they finished with two each.

Max Ritchie took the loss for Brown after scattering 11 hits in 6.2 innings. Mark Sluys went 3-for-3 at the plate and finished with seven hits in the series.
