Colonel Volleyball resumes play Friday at Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Nicholls State University volleyball squad continues tournament play this weekend at the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic, facing Jacksonville State and host UL-Lafayette Friday and Mississippi Valley State Saturday inside Earl K. Long Gym.

The Colonels (0-3) are looking to rebound after a tough weekend at the Southern Miss Invitational where they faced Miami (Fla.) and host Southern Miss, who are a combined 7-1.

Senior Sydney Lerille spearheaded the offensive attack, accumulating a team-high 31 kills. Lerille (14 kills, 10 digs) and sophomore setter Emily Venable (32 assists, 10 digs) each produced double-doubles in Nicholls' four-set defeat to Jackson State. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Tobison was one kill from joining them and totaled a team-high nine kills in the match against Miami.

The Gamecocks (2-1) won two out of three at the Western Carolina Invitational, dropping their opener to Towson before picking up victories against Charleston Southern and Western Carolina.

JSU's roster features All-OVC middle blocker Mackenzie Rombach alongside primary attacking duo Charis Ludtke and Allyson Zuhlke. Those three have combined for 93 of the Gamecocks 142 kills this season.

The Ragin' Cajuns (1-2) split their first two matches with Tulane before being swept by Southern Miss.

UL-Lafayette boasts two All-SBC student-athletes in setter Jessica Bartczyszyn and outside hitter Stacey Reilly. Bartczyszyn has commanded a balanced attack thus far as five players have 16-plus kills, including Reilly's team-high 24.

This will be the opening weekend for the Devilettes, who return last year's leading attacker in Kalin Barnes (2.4 kills/set) but must replace 6-3 middle blocker Cynthia Richardson.

Richardson tallied 51 of the squad's 94 blocks in 2016. MVSU concluded the 2016 campaign with a 3-27 overall record, including 1-17 in SWAC play.
