Colonels prepped to face HBU Friday, Corpus Christi Sunday

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University soccer squad hopes to build on its most recent performance when it battles Houston Baptist University Friday at 7 p.m. and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi University Sunday on a 1 p.m. kickoff.

The Colonels (4-6, 1-2 SLC) put together a brilliant performance in their 2-1 upending of Abilene Christian. Midfielders Haylee Atwell and Emily Werenskiold gave Nicholls a comfortable 2-0 margin at the 68th-minute mark.

After the Wildcats tallied a score in the 84th minute, the Colonels intelligently possessed the ball into the opposition's corner for the majority of the finish. Freshman keeper Taylor Benoit recorded nine saves in the contest.

On the season, Atwell and Werenskiold have earned three goals each. Werenskiold also has two assists as she leads the Colonels with eight points and 12 shots on goal.

The Huskies (3-4-1, 2-1 SLC) posted two shutouts in their last two matches, resulting in player of the week honors for Alanis Guevara, Ellee Hall and Megan Rickert.

Guevara, who is eighth in Division I with 8.0 saves per game, denied 18 shots, nine in each match. Hall knocked in the game-winner in each match as she ties the league lead with five goals and three game-winners. Rickert played all 180 minutes on the backline.

Corpus Christi
Sunday, Oct. 1 | Dugan Soccer Stadium | 1 p.m.

The Islanders (4-4-1, 1-2 SLC), despite opening SLC play with a 2-0 victory over UIW, were shut out in their last two matches to Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin.

Corpus Christi has three student-athletes with four points and eight different goal scorers. Katie Lawrence fronts the Islanders with two goals, both acting as game winners.
