THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will play host to one of the Southland Conference's elite teams as the Colonels take on Lamar University Wednesday night in Stopher Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Nicholls (8-10, 3-4 SLC) is 0-2 in home league games so far this season, but the losses came against the teams currently in first and second place in the standings. With Lamar (11-6, 6-1 SLC) bringing a three-game winning streak to town Wednesday, the Colonels will have played the top three teams in the league which have a combined 19-2 record.
Lamar finished third in the conference last season, but the Colonels were able to take down the Cardinals in Thibodaux, 78-67. LU returned the favor later in the season with a four-point win in the Montagne Center.
Nicholls is looking to snap a two-game skid following two consecutive 21-point losses. The Colonels faced two of the league's top defenses in the Southland – Central Arkansas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – and were limited to 48 and 55 points. While Lamar ranks fifth in the SLC in points allowed, the Cardinals are the conference's top scoring team at 79.5 points.
Seventy points has been a key figure for the Red and Gray this season as the team is 6-1 when reaching the benchmark. The lone setback was in the conference home opener against Stephen F. Austin (86-73).
Junior guard
Cassidy Barrios continues to be one of the league's most versatile players, ranking in the top six of the Southland in scoring, rebounding, free throw percentage, steals, and blocks. Barrios is nearly averaging a double-double with 14.6 points and 9.3 rebounds and leads the league in minutes played after going the distance in the last four contests.
Lamar features its own stat-stuffing guard in junior Chastadie Barrs. Along with averaging 13.2 points, Barrs leads the Southland in assists and steals while bringing down 5.8 rebounds per game. Houston transfer Moe Kinard is fourth in the SLC in scoring at 16.1 points, and Kiandra Bowers is averaging 8.6 points and 8.7 rebounds.
After the teams split the matchups last season, Lamar holds a 23-15 advantage in the all-time series. The Colonels have topped Lamar in the previous four meetings in Thibodaux.
