Colonels fall at home to Southeastern, 66-57

THIBODAUX, La. — Junior Cassidy Barrios scored 16 points to lead a trio of Colonels in double figures, but Southeastern Louisiana outscored the Nicholls State University women's basketball team by 10 points in the third as the Colonels dropped their fourth-straight game, 66-57, Saturday in Stopher Gymnasium.

The loss put Nicholls at 8-12 overall and 3-6 in the Southland, and spoiled the debut on the brand new Broussard Court. With the wins, SLU snapped a three-game skid in the series while improving to 4-16 and 3-6.

Barrios had a big stat line for the Red and Gray, adding seven rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals. Tia Charles finished with 14 points and two steals as Nicholls had 11 takeaways for the game, but were outscored, 22-17, in points off turnovers.

Nicholls had trouble slowing down SLU's Taylin Underwood, who had a game-high 22 points and had three of the Lady Lions' seven 3-balls in the win. She finished 8 of 17 from the field and SLU made 42 percent for the game. Both teams struggled at the line at 60 percent.

The Colonels and SLU grinded out a low-scoring first half, with the Lady Lions heading into the locker room with a 23-22 advantage. But in the third, the visitors scored 22 points in the frame and held Nicholls to 12. SLU created some separation with a 7-0 spurt and added another 7-0 run towards the tail end to grab a 41-32 advantage.

In the fourth, Nicholls made a late push, making it a two-possession game after a Charles 3-pointer with 24 seconds left. But SLU added three free throws down the stretch to drop the Colonels to 2-6 home.

Tykeria Williams had 11 points for the Colonels, but made just 3 of 13 from 3-point range. As a team, Nicholls connected on 7 of 26 for 27 percent.
