NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Nicholls State University soccer team was downed 3-2 by Northwestern State University Sunday at the Demon Soccer Complex as Kylee Dominy struck a free kick into goal in the 102nd minute.
The loss eliminates the Colonels (3-14, 1-9 SLC) from Southland Conference Tournament contention. Nicholls overcame a two-goal deficit in the early stages of the match, surrendering the first to April Ficarrotta before the first minute passed and the second by Brittany Caserma in the third. Both goals were assisted by Brittany Cecil as the Colonels only managed one shot by senior
Francesca Curteis during the 42nd minute.
Nicholls responded with two goals of its own in the second half as junior
Blaire Laiche and Curteis took advantage of counterattacks for scores. Senior
Alison Ward had back-to-back attempts in the 77th minute and fellow senior
Haylee Atwell connected on a header in the 81st minute, but all three attacks were saved by Lady Demons (10-8, 4-6) Kayla Bomben.
A foul on Caserma set up Dominy's free kick in extra time. Despite the loss, junior goalkeeper
Roosa Hurmerinta recorded eight saves, doubling Bomben's count.
The Colonels conclude the 2018 season at Southeastern Louisiana Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
