THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University soccer team was defeated 2-0 by Lamar University Sunday at the Nicholls Soccer Complex despite holding a 17-16 advantage in shots.
The Colonels (2-11, 0-6 SLC) received four shots from sophomore
Hannah Bodron and three via senior
Francesca Curteis. That duo accounted for two of Nicholls' five shots on goal, with freshman
Malin Soleng recording one and freshman
Celine Schot totaling two in the second half.
Schot bent a shot from right to left in the 73rd minute and blasted a cross from Curteis in the 76th minute, but both attempts were saved by goalkeeper Sandra Nygard.
The Cardinals (8-3-2, 4-0-2 SLC) managed one goal each from Kelso Peskin and Ali Hebert. Peskin converted her sixth score of the season in the 28th minute, dribbling the ball past a Colonel defender before firing a shot past goalkeeper
Roosa Hurmerinta. Hebert controlled a Peskin pass in the 85th minute and slotted the ball into the top-left corner to seal the win.
Lamar's Lucy Ashworth compiled five shots while Hebert and Madison Ledet each put two shots on target. Nygard collected five saves, all in the second half.
The Colonels resume their three-match home stretch Friday versus Sam Houston State. Kickoff at the Nicholls Soccer Complex is scheduled for 4 p.m.
