Barrios, Ezechukwu double-doubles push Colonels past Devilettes Saturday

THIBODAUX, La. – Senior guard Cassidy Barrios and junior forward Chrystal Ezechukwu registered double-doubles to lift the Nicholls State University women's basketball team to a 72-47 win over Mississippi Valley State University Saturday at Stopher Gym.

Barrios totaled 24 points and a season-high 16 rebounds to claim her third straight double-double. The Raceland native has scored 20-plus points in seven of eight games this season. Ezechukwu set season highs with 15 points and 13 boards.

With the game tied at 10, sophomore guard Destiny Collins converted a layup and got fouled in the process. Barrios knocked down two free throws to close the 5-0 spurt, handing the Colonels (4-4) a 15-10 lead.

Nicholls closed the first quarter with a 22-14 edge, scoring five of the final seven points, three of which came on Barrios free throws.

The Colonels clamped down defensively in the second quarter, limiting the Devilettes (1-6) to 27 percent shooting from the field while increasing their lead to 14 at 36-22.

Nicholls outscored MVSU 15-14 in the third despite making just 4-of-18 field goal attempts and iced the victory with a 21-point fourth quarter. The Colonels dominated the glass by holding a 57-25 advantage in rebounds. MVSU received 18 points from Kristy Parker.

Nicholls travels to New Orleans Tuesday to face Tulane. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Fogelman Arena.
