Colonels take down CU Harrodsburg in non-conference finale

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team topped Campbellsville University Harrodsburg, 88-63, Saturday afternoon in its non-conference finale at Stopher Gym.

The Colonels (7-6) started the first 10 minutes of the game with a 22-4 run as sophomore Kevin Johnson threw an alley-oop to senior Daniel Regis and followed with a layup to conclude a 15-point scoring barrage. Johnson knocked down a triple later in the half that capped an 11-0 run, increasing the advantage to 22 at 35-13. Johnson accumulated 12 points, four assists and four steals in a first half that saw Nicholls outscore the Tigers (3-1) 43-26.

The Colonels scored the first 10 points of the second half, sparked by back-to-back treys from junior Brandon Moore Jr. and Johnson. Nicholls saw its biggest lead of the game at the 8:34 mark when junior Elvis Harvey knocked down a jumper to make it 74-38. The Colonels were able to play well enough down the stretch to secure the win.

Johnson piled up 17 points, six steals and five assists. Those six swipes marked a new career high for the Thibodaux native. Graduate transfer Jeremiah Jefferson led all scorers with 18 points. Harvey earned his first double-double in the Red and Gray, totaling 10 points and 10 boards.

CU Harrodsburg received a team-high 16 points from Antoine Darby.

Nicholls will face Northwestern State Wednesday in its first conference contest of the season. Tipoff in Natchitoches is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
