ABILENE, Texas – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team searches for its fourth straight road win Wednesday when it faces Abilene Christian University at Moody Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Colonels (14-9, 8-2 SLC) regained first place in the Southland standings after a 17-point thumping of New Orleans on Saturday. Senior
Roddy Peters totaled a game-high 27 points, six assists and three steals. Consequently, the Washington D.C. native was named SLC Player of the Week on Monday. The contest marked Peters' eighth straight double-figure game including seven 20-plus performances.
Peters (19.2 ppg) and fellow senior
Tevon Saddler (16.2 ppg) are the only two teammates in the top-10 of the SLC scoring rankings, sitting second and sixth, respectively. Saddler also averages 6.9 boards per contest, which ranks sixth.
During league play, Nicholls has the top field-goal percentage (.504) and scoring margin (+10.2) and the second-best scoring offense (78.5 ppg) and scoring defense (68.3 ppg). The 8-2 record in league play marks the best such 10-game start since the 1998 season, the last time the Colonels made an NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Wildcats (14-10, 6-5 SLC) are in a three-way tie for sixth with Lamar and UCA. ACU's roster features the league's last two Freshman of the Year candidates in Jalone Friday (2017) and Jaylen Franklin (2016). Friday fronts the squad with 14.3 points per game while Franklin ranks third in the SLC in assists per game (4.8). The Wildcats boast a 3-2 record at home in conference play this season.
