Colonels take on ACU at home Wednesday night

THIBODAUX, La. – After picking up its fourth road win in league play, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to capture its first Southland win at home as the Colonels host Abilene Christian Wednesday night.

Tipoff is scheduled 6 p.m., and the game will stream live on YouTube, courtesy of ESPN 100.3 FM.

Nicholls (9-12, 4-6 SLC) is coming off an emotional win last weekend, coming from behind to defeat New Orleans.  The Colonels found themselves down 16 at the break before Cassidy Barrios and company caught fire in the third quarter. Nicholls outscored UNO 33-13 in the period and went on to win after Barrios hit three free throws with 0.3 seconds left for a 62-61 victory.

While the win kept the Red and Gray in the hunt for a postseason berth, Nicholls will need to find some wins at home with five of its final eight games coming in Thibodaux. Following Wednesday's game against Abilene Christian (14-7, 8-3 SLC), Nicholls will go for the season sweep against HBU Saturday.

Barrios led Nicholls with 24 points and 17 rebounds against UNO, and paces the squad in both categories, averaging 15.0 points and 9.6 rebounds, and leads the Southland with 10 double-doubles. Tykeria Williams is also averaging double figures, pouring in 12.9 points per game after scoring 13 against the Privateers.

Along with Barrios, Nicholls received some great rebounding from their post players – Marina Lilly and Bryanna Washington. The team held a plus-nine advantage in the win against UNO, marking the first time since its Jan. 6 win at HBU that the Colonels outrebounded the opposition.

ACU started the conference schedule with six straight wins before dropping three of four. The Wildcats got back on track with an impressive comeback of their own, winning at Sam Houston State on Saturday, 75-72. ACU outscored the Bearkats, 24-16, in the final period.

The Wildcats are led by sophomore guard Breanna Wright, who is averaging 18.1 points in league play. Wright has been deadly from behind the arc, knocking down 35 3-pointers at a 44.9 percent clip in 11 SLC games. She is joined in double figures in conference games by Dominique Golightly (12.5) and Sara Williamson (11.4). All three are averaging double figures on the season, led by Wright's 14.7 ppg.

ACU leads the brief all-time series, 3-1, with all three wins coming in Stopher Gym. The Wildcats won last season's matchup, 89-73, despite a 21-point effort by Barrios.
