THIBODAUX, La. – Junior starting pitcher
Jacob Bedevian recorded the Nicholls State University baseball team's third quality start of the weekend despite a 5-3 defeat to Northwestern State University Sunday in the series finale on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.
Bedevian (0-3, 3.34 ERA) tossed 6.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits accompanied by three strikeouts and a walk. The Demons (9-7, 2-1 SLC) used four pitchers in the win with Danny Hlad picking up his first win of the season. Jose Vasquez notched his second save of the season, throwing 2.2 innings of two-hit ball with four strikeouts.
The Colonels (4-12, 1-2 SLC) commenced the scoring in the third inning when junior infielder
Ethan Valdez drove in sophomore designated hitter
Dillon Belle on a single to right field. Northwestern State tied it up in the fourth when Kelsey Richard smacked a single down the left-field line that plunked third base and fluttered into the outfield, allowing JP Lagreco to score from second.
Nicholls responded in the fifth inning when junior infielder
Brady Bell laced a double down the right-field line that plated senior outfielder
Lee Clark. Bell then came home on a single by Valdez to give the Red and Gray a 3-1 lead.
The Demons found their answer in the seventh when Richard struck a solo homer to left-field and All-SLC Second Teamer David Fry stroked a two-RBI double to left-center to give Northwestern State a 4-3 edge. The Demons added an insurance run in the ninth when Fry mashed a homer to left-center as the Colonels went scoreless in the final four innings.
Nicholls had runners on first and second with none out in the sixth but a popup on a bunt attempt halted that rally. The Colonels had a runner in scoring position in three of the final four innings despite not scoring.
Nicholls returns to the Did Wednesday to face Purdue. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
