Errors costly in series-opening loss at Southeastern

HAMMOND, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team received three home runs, including two from Kali Clement, but three errors in the fourth led to six runs for Southeastern Louisiana as the Colonels dropped the series opener, 6-4, Friday evening in North Oak Park.

The loss put an end to the Colonels' 10-game winning streak and gave Nicholls (19-8, 6-1 SLC) its first conference setback. The Colonels and Lady Lions (18-11, 5-2 SLC) will wrap up the series Saturday with a noon doubleheader.

Nicholls doubled SLU in hits, 8-4, but finished with a season-high five errors. The three miscues in the fourth broke a scoreless tie, leading to the big inning for SLU.

The Colonels had chances early in the game, leaving two runners on in the second and the bases full in the third. Samantha Dares led off the fourth with a double after the ball hit off the top of the wall, but the Colonels were unable to push a run home to grab the lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, things fell apart on defense. SLU put two runners on with a pair of base hits before Bailey Hughes dropped the ball at second to allow a runner to safely reach third. On the next play, Amanda Gianelloni made a great catch for the second out at short but threw the ball away at third trying for the double play, resulting in a 1-0 deficit. A throwing error by Jewel Lara kept the inning alive, and Kelsey Nichols made the Colonels pay with a 3-run double.

Megan Landry left the game in the inning, but SLU tacked on two more runs on a fielder's choice against reliever Alexis LaBure.

Nicholls got two runs back in the fifth, using back-to-back homers by Clement and Gianelloni. Then in the seventh, Clement went yard again with a 2-run shot to make it 6-4 with one out. But Tanner Wright forced two grounders to end the game, giving SLU a win in the opener.

Landry (12-4) was tagged with the loss, lasting 3.2 innings with four hits and two strikeouts. All five of her runs were unearned. LaBure pitched the final 2.1 innings, walking two while striking out one.

Kelsey Miller continued her hot streak, going 2-for-4 to extend her hitting streak to seven games. Lara and Mracich also singled for the Colonels.

Rachel Hayes earned the win for SLU, improving to 6-5 on the year. Mahalia Gibson had two RBIs for the Lady Lions.
