HOUSTON, Texas – The Nicholls State University softball team opened Southland Conference play with a doubleheader sweep against HBU on Friday, defeating the Huskies, 4-2 and 9-3.
The wins improved the Colonels' record to 13-7 overall, 2-0 in the Southland, and marked their third- and fourth-straight victories. HBU dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in the SLC.
Megan Landry (8-3) tossed a complete game in the opening win, while
Jewel Lara and
Kali Clement led the offense with two hits each. Clement drove in the first run in the third before HBU tied it in the fifth with an RBI double.
In the sixth,
Amanda Gianelloni homered for the fourth time this season, and Nicholls added two runs in the seventh on a pair of HBU passed balls. The runs turned out to be needed as the Huskies tagged Landry with a run in the bottom half. With two down, Landry was charged with an error and HBU followed with an RBI single by Sierra Humphrey. But Landry forced a flyout to preserve the win.
In the nightcap, the Colonels racked up 18 hits and pulled away with seven runs in the fifth.
Kasey Frederick had an outstanding showing at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs. In the big inning, Frederick cleared the bases with a double for a 5-1 advantage.
Three other Colonels had three-hit games.
Bailey Hughes had two doubles and a single, while
Samantha Mracich and
Gretchen Morgan had three singles each.
Alexis LaBure (3-3) picked up the win, lasting 4.1 innings with one earned run on three hits.
Amanda Holliday pitched 2.2 innings and gave up two runs on four hits.
Nicholls jumped out to a 2-0 advantage on RBI singles by
Kelsey Miller and Mracich in the second and fourth innings. HBU scored one in the bottom of the fourth before Frederick started the Colonels' fifth with her bases-loaded double.
Mracich continued the inning with an RBI single, and Hughes and Gianelloni capped it with run-scoring doubles.
HBU added a 2-run double in the fifth from Demi Janak to make the final.
