THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team used a 12-run first inning to top Alcorn State University, 18-0, in seven innings Wednesday night at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.
"Our guys really locked in," Nicholls head baseball coach
Seth Thibodeaux said. "They didn't want to leave anything out there tonight. It's fun to see, and our guys just kept coming. It was good for us to get three [wins] in a row going into a big weekend."
Nicholls (13-21) was fronted by senior infielder
Ethan Valdez and redshirt junior infielder
Brady Bell. Valdez notched three hits, two runs and two RBIs and pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Bell also recorded three hits and scored two runs while totaling four RBIs, falling a double short of the cycle.
On the mound, sophomore lefty
Bryan Taylor picked up the win, improving to 3-4 as he scattered five hits through five innings with five strikeouts. Senior
Jarred Scott put up a zero in the sixth before Valdez closed it out.
The Colonels sent 17 batters to the plate in the first frame, accumulating seven hits. The Braves (8-24) had an opportunity to get out of the inning first time freshman outfielder
Dane Simon came up, but third baseman Edward Jackson dropped a soft liner. Simon later grounded out to relief pitcher Brandon Thomas to conclude the inning.
The impressive first inning saw extra-base hits by Bell and senior outfielder
Chet Niehaus. Bell stroked a triple to the gap in left-center and Niehaus later doubled to nearly the same spot.
This is the second time this season that Nicholls scores 10-plus runs in an inning as the squad mustered 14 in the second inning against Sacred Heart on March 6.
Alcorn's Der'Vincent Hamilton and Wallace Rios compiled two hits apiece, accounting for four of the Braves seven base knocks.
The Colonels return to action Friday in the first battle of a three-game series against UIW in San Antonio. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
