Colonels drop series finale to McNeese, 7-3

LAKE CHARLES, La. – There was no decisive inning and only two home runs, including one inside-the-park by Kelsey Miller, but McNeese scored in all but one inning to take the series against the Nicholls State University softball team in a 7-3 decision Saturday afternoon at Joe Miller Field.

Trailing 7-2 in the seventh, Nicholls (27-13, 12-6 SLC) put together a rally started on Miller's inside-the-park homer. After a 26-minute rain delay, Nicholls put two on with a hit-by-pitch and a walk, but both runners were stranded on base as the Colonels dropped their second-straight road series.

Both teams had seven hits, with Miller leading the Colonels with two. Moriah Strother homered for the third time in the series, giving the senior five in the last five games.

Megan Landry (15-6) pitched 3.2 innings for Nicholls, allowing four earned runs on six hits. Her first four outs recorded were via strikeouts, but McNeese was able to score two runs in the opening frame to grab an early lead.

The Colonels tied it up in the second, with Strother starting the scoring with a home run to right. The next batter, Samantha Dares, nearly followed suit but the ball bounced off the wall resulting in a triple. Two batters later, Emma Holland singled to right center to make the score 2-2.

After McNeese scored in the third, the Cowgirls doubled the lead with another run in the fourth. Landry walked two with two outs, and Morgan Catron delivered an RBI double down the left field line. Landry would leave the game for Alexis LaBure, who finished with two earned runs in 2.1 innings.

McNeese extended its lead to 7-2 with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth, while Alexsandra Flores (14-7) continued to bend but not break in the circle for the Cowgirls. It wasn't until the seventh that she allowed the third run to score when Miller sprayed a single to left, and the ball rolled to the fence after Lauren Brown missed on a diving try. But Flores got a flyout and a popout after the short rain delay to seal the victory. She tossed all seven innings, striking out four.

Catron and Brown led the Cowgirls with two hits and two RBIs.
