THIBODAUX, La. – Freshman
Alexis LaBure threw her first career no-hitter as the Nicholls State University softball team swept Alcorn State with a pair of run-rule victories, 9-0 and 8-0, Tuesday night at Swanner Field.
The opener lasted just five innings, and
Moriah Strother hit a walk-off double in the sixth in the nightcap to give LaBure (9-4) a six-inning no-hitter. In the opener, the Lady Braves had a lone bunt single off of
Megan Landry (16-7) for their only hit of the day.
LaBure struck out five in her outing and walked three. She issued two of her walks in the second but retired the next two batters, and in the fifth, walked one with one out before
Amanda Gianelloni fielded a grounder up the middle for a double play.
With the Colonels leading 5-0 in the sixth, two walks paired with a
Julia Bailey single loaded the bases with two outs.
Bailey Hughes then delivered a 2-run single and Strother blasted a double to right center to end the game.
Nicholls had 12 hits in Game 2, led by two each from
Samantha Dares,
Gretchen Morgan, Strother, and Gianelloni. Dares doubled in two runs in the first, and after Mallory Marino had an RBI groundout in the third, Morgan gave the Colonels a 5-0 lead with a 2-run single with two outs in the fifth.
For the opener, the Colonels used a five-run fourth to put the run-rule into play and went on to win, 8-0.
Landry was perfect through 3.1 innings before Desirea Lindsey put down a bunt towards third for Alcorn's first and only hit of the day. Landry finished with four strikeouts and walked none.
Amanda Holliday pitched the fifth and struck out two.
The Colonels totaled eight hits, led by
Kasey Frederick,
Emma Holland, and Gianelloni with two apiece. Dares and Gianelloni each drove in two runs to highlight the fourth.

With three series remaining in the conference season, Nicholls is one of four teams tied for first place and only lead two others – Northwestern State and Central Arkansas – by one game. Nicholls and NSU will square off for a three-game set at Swanner Field beginning Friday night at 5 p.m.
