Colonels rally late to defeat NSU, 4-3

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – Kasey Frederick hit an infield single in the sixth for the game-winning RBI and Megan Landry tossed a complete game as the Nicholls State University softball team won its series opener against Northwestern State, 4-3, Friday evening at Swanner Field.

After Nicholls (30-13, 13-6 SLC) saw its 2-0 lead evaporate in the fifth on a 3-run homer by NSU's Cayla Jones, the Colonels scrapped together two runs in the sixth to regain the lead. Northwestern State (24-17, 11-8 SLC) nearly turned a double play to get out of the inning, but Samantha Mracich beat the throw home after a groundout. With a runner on third, Frederick hit the ball to short, diving to the bag at first to beat the throw for the 4-3 lead.

Landry allowed her fifth hit of the day to lead off the seventh, but following a sac bunt, she forced two pop-ups in the infield to give Nicholls the victory.

Landry (17-7) picked up the win, despite recording no strikeouts for the first time in a start this season. The last time she had a zero in strikeout column was in the 2017 Southland Conference Tournament against Lamar, which also resulted in a victory. She allowed just an infield single through four before Northwestern State tagged her for three hits in the fifth, capped by Jones' two-out homer to right.

Nicholls had seven hits in the win, with Frederick leading the way with a 2-for-4 evening. She put the Colonels on the board in the third with a base hit to center, scoring Kelsey Miller who tripled earlier in the frame. The Colonels then took advantage of two walks and an error in the fourth to grab a 2-0 lead on Jewel Lara's infield single.

Micaela Bouvier was in line for the win for NSU, pitching 4.0 innings with six hits and one earned run. Mikayla Brown (9-6) suffered the loss, allowing two unearned in 2.0 innings and had four strikeouts looking.

Amanda Gianelloni, Kali Clement, and Samantha Dares each singled for the Colonels. Gianelloni extended her hitting streak to 10 games.

With the win, Nicholls claimed its 30th victory for the third straight season. The program had not completed the feat since the 1994-98 teams had five consecutive 40-win campaigns.
