Colonels pummel Southern, 12-3

BATON ROUGE – Behind another strong midweek performance from junior Parker White, the Nicholls State University baseball team throttled Southern University, 12-3, Tuesday night at Lee-Hines Field.

White scattered five hits and allowed one runs in seven innings, improving his record to 4-2. This is his third quality start in his last four appearances as a starting pitcher, lowering his ERA to 3.56.

At the plate, seniors Kyle Knauth and Chet Niehaus, redshirt junior Brady Bell, sophomore Dillon Belle and freshman Xane Washington all recorded two RBIs. Senior Ethan Valdez, Bell and Niehaus notched two hits each. The Red and Gray finished with 12 hits as nine different student-athletes produced a base knock.

The Colonels (17-25) commenced the scoring in the first inning when Knauth crushed a two-out, two-run homer to right field.

The Jaguars (8-27) responded with a run in the bottom half as John Pope stroked an RBI single through the left side. White had the bases loaded with one out in the frame but induced a popout and 4-6-3 double play to escape the jam.

Nicholls added four more runs in the third inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing, two-RBI triple to right field via Washington. Senior Lee Clark and Bell accounted for the other two runs with a sacrifice fly and RBI single, respectively.

Bell contributed another sacrifice fly in the fourth, and Niehaus roped a double to right-center in the fifth to increase the Colonels' margin to 8-1.

With the bases loaded in the seventh, Niehaus plated freshman Nathan Tribble on a sacrifice fly to center. Nicholls would grow its advantage to 12-1 in the eighth when Belle pushed a two-RBI single through the left side and senior Joey Morales followed with a sacrifice fly.

Southern tallied its second and third runs on a two-out fielding error by Morales.

Markaylon Boyd was the losing pitcher for the Jaguars, surrendering five earned runs in two innings.

The Colonels return to the Did for a three-game set against Lamar. Friday's contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
