BATON ROUGE – Freshman outfielder
Dane Simon recorded a career-high three hits as the Nicholls State University baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision to No. 17 LSU Tuesday night at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
The Tigers improved their record to 19-11 while the Colonels fell to 9-19. LSU scored 10 runs on 15 hits and Nicholls one run on seven hits.
Sophomore
Bryan Taylor (2-4) was handed the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk in 2.1 innings. AJ Labas tossed five innings and allowed one run to improve to 3-1.
The Tigers commenced the scoring in the second inning when Bryce Jordan roped a single to left field that scored his brother, Beau Jordan. Because Hunter Feduccia's base hit touched Bryce Jordan, Taylor escaped the inning without allowing another run.
LSU broke the game open in the third on back-to-back solo homers by Zach Watson and Austin Bain. Feduccia later singled in the inning to bring home Daniel Cabrera, increasing the lead to 4-0.
In the top of the fifth, senior
Joey Morales was hit by a pitch and freshman
Dane Simon singled to center field to put runners on first and third. Morales the came home on a grounder by redshirt junior
Brady Bell.
The Tigers responded with three runs in the next half-inning. Redshirt sophomore
Austin Bollinger took the mound with a runner on first after a 43-minute weather delay. He allowed a leadoff walk and a bunt single followed by a sacrifice fly and a single up the middle to put LSU ahead 6-1. The Tigers scored their final run of the inning on a bases-loaded walk by Bain.
LSU padded the lead with two runs in the seventh and another score in the eighth. The Colonels were not without opportunities, going 0-8 with runners in scoring position.
Nicholls returns to action Wednesday against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. First pitch at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
