NEW ORLEANS – The Nicholls State University baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision to the University of New Orleans Friday night at Maestri Field.
The Colonels fell to 23-28 and 11-14 in league play while the Privateers improved to 22-28 and 11-14 in the Southland.
Nicholls received two hits apiece from seniors
Kyle Knauth and
Joey Morales and redshirt junior
Brady Bell. UNO's Owen Magee hit for the cycle, recording four RBIs highlighted by a two-run homer in the eighth inning.
On the mound,
Cayden Hatcher fell to 3-7, surrendering four runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts in seven innings. John Barr picked up the win to move his record to 4-4, tossing three scoreless relief innings.
Senior
Ethan Valdez roped the first pitch of the game to left field for a single, advanced to second on a Morales sacrifice bunt and scored via a
Chet Niehaus RBI single. The Colonels added two more runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI single from Morales.
Nicholls was held scoreless and totaled just three hits in the final four innings as UNO mounted its comeback. Magee's second hit of the night was an RBI double for the Privateers first run in the fifth inning. Pearce Howard followed with a sacrifice fly to cut the Colonels lead to one at 3-2.
A Magee triple and Howard double accounted for two more runs in the seventh, giving UNO its first lead of the game at 4-3. Capped by Magee's homer, the Privateers plated four insurance runs in the eighth to seal the game.
The two teams face off at Maestri Field again on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
