THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team fell 12-5 in its final game of the weekend Sunday against the University of New Orleans at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels (23-30, 11-16 SLC) received two hits apiece from senior
Joey Morales and junior
Ethan Valdez and two RBIs from senior
Kyle Knauth. Reliever
Christian Bahlinger fell to 2-2 as he allowed five runs on five hits in 0.1 innings.
The Privateers (24-28, 13-14 SLC) were led offensively by Pierce Howard's four hits and three RBIs and Beau Bratton's three hits and four RBIs. On the mound, Kyle Arjona improved to 3-4, tossing 6.2 scoreless innings after starter John Michael Stephens recorded just one out in the first.
UNO got to Nicholls starter
Jacob Bedevian with four consecutive singles in the first and the latter two by Veillon and Bratton scoring one run each. The Colonels, however, countered with five runs in the bottom half, highlighted by Knauth's two-RBI single to left-center field. Nicholls had just one runner reach scoring position from that point, by way of Valdez's leadoff double in the seventh.
The Colonels scattered four hits in the final eight innings, allowing the Privateers to mount their comeback. UNO tallied three in the third followed by a five-spot in the fourth to hold a 10-5 advantage that would not be relinquished. RBI singles by Howard and Darren Willis in the fifth and sixth, respectively, handed the Privateers two additional insurance runs.
Nicholls returns to the Did on Thursday in Game 1 of its final series of the regular season against UCA. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
