SUGAR LAND, Texas –
The Nicholls State University baseball team's remarkable run at the 2018 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament came to an end Friday night when it fell 3-2 to No. 3 Northwestern State University in the semifinals at Constellation Field.

After allowing a run in the first inning on two walks and a single, Junior Parker White settled in nicely to shut out the Demons (36-22) for the next six innings. The 6-6 righty concluded three of the first four innings on double plays and struck out the side in the second. White earned a no decision, tossing 6.2 innings of three-hit ball.

The Colonels (28-32) found their equalizer in the fourth inning when senior Lee Clark struck a two-out triple to left field and freshman Xane Washington plated him on a double down the left-field line.

The contest would remain tied for the next three innings until Nicholls broke through in the eighth.

Redshirt junior third baseman Brady Bell ripped a leadoff double to right field and senior shortstop Joey Morales advanced him to third on a single to shallow right field. Following a 71-minute weather delay, senior outfielder Chet Niehaus pulled a single through the right side, plating Bell to hand the Colonels their first edge of the game at 2-1. Northwestern State quickly answered in the bottom of the eighth. Outfielder Kwan Adkins led off with a bunt for a single. Southland Conference Player of the Year David Fry smacked a triple to center field, just beyond a diving Niehaus, to plate Adkins and tie the game 2-2.

Fry scored the game-winning run when the next batter, Tyler Smith, chopped a grounder to Morales, whose throw home was tardy.

Senior Alex Ernestine was handed the loss, dropping his record to 5-7. He surrendered two hits and two runs while recording one out.

Reed Michel picked up the win for the Demons, getting the final two outs in the eighth. Jose Vasquez struck out the side in the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.
