Colonels continue tournament play at Sawyer Camillo Classic

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University volleyball team will travel to Lafayette Friday to compete in the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic, a two-day event inside Earl K. Long Gym.

The Colonels (1-3) open with Houston at noon Friday followed by a match versus host UL-Lafayette at 6:30 p.m. The Red and Gray will conclude the tournament Saturday against Mississippi Valley State at 2 p.m.

Nicholls freshman outside hitter Katie Jones recorded 50 of the squad's 154 kills at the North Texas Invitational, mashing a career-high 18 in a five-set loss to Northeastern. Senior setter Jade Piper (44 assists, 12 digs) and junior outside hitter Heidi Carpenter (10 kills, 11 digs) provided double-doubles in the four-set win over Grambling. Junior defensive specialist Emily Venable ranks first in the Southland with eight service aces.

The Cougars (4-0) bested Murray State, New Orleans and Nebraska-Omaha at the UNO Tournament over the weekend before sweeping Prairie View A&M on Tuesday.

Houston's .277 team hitting percentage sits atop the AAC and 30th in Division I. The Cougars have been fronted offensively by Megan Duncan's 4.1 kills per set, including a 22-kill outburst during their five-set victory over UNO.

at UL-Lafayette | Friday, Aug. 31 | 6:30 p.m.

Featuring Preseason All-SBC junior middle blocker Dree'Ana Abram and sophomore outside hitter Hali Wisnoskie, the Ragin' Cajuns posted a 2-1 record at the Tulane I-10 Challenge, topping UIW and UTEP before falling to host Tulane in the finale.

Wisnoskie paced the squad offensively with 4.0 kills per set. Senior middle blocker Nia Antoine totaled 23 kills on a team-best .409 attacking percentage. UL-Lafayette runs a 6-2 offensive system with sophomore Avery Breaux (5.5 assists/set) and redshirt freshman Milayne Danna (5.2 assists/set).

at MVSU | Saturday, Sept. 1 | 2 p.m.

Although the Devilettes (0-4) were swept in every match at the StarkVegas Classic, senior outside hitter Kalin Barnes joined the 600-kill club as she amassed 24 throughout the event. Barnes was the only SWAC student-athlete in 2017 to amass 300 kills and 300 digs.

Senior Taylor Selfridge was named to the StarkVegas Classic All-Tournament team after accumulating a team-high 39 digs along with 21 kills, the second-most behind Barnes. MVSU is the only team in the SWAC to return every starter from 2017.
