Colonels sweep MVSU in Sawyer Camillo Memorial finale

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Nicholls State University volleyball team bested Mississippi Valley State University, 25-13, 25-17, 25-19, Saturday in its final contest of the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic at Earl K. Long Gym.

The Colonels (2-5) dominated from start to finish, totaling 11.0 blocks and 11 service aces. Freshman outside hitter Katie Jones recorded a match-high 10 kills, all of which came in the second set. Senior setter Jade Piper dished out 22 assists.

The Devilettes (0-8) received a match-high 17 digs from libero Jessica Bell along with eight kills via Tyler Caliste. MVSU was limited to a .011 (23-22-89) attacking percentage.

Nicholls pushed points early in the first set, tallying 10 of the first 13 behind three kills from sophomore Sydney Swann and two aces from junior libero Emily Venable. The Colonels strung together three- and four-point runs later in the set and at 24-13 senior Brieanna Hill blocked an attack that was originally called out before being overturned for touching a Devilette.

The second set was tied at eight when Piper rejected an attack and Jones fired back-to-back kills to spark a 5-0 run. Nicholls never lost the lead from that point, tallying five of the final six to go ahead two sets to none. Sophomore middle blocker Kimberly Iwunze made her presence felt at the net in the final set, accumulating three kills in eight attempts and two solo blocks. The Colonels used an early 4-0 run capped by a kill from freshman outside hitter Emily Gauthreaux to grab a 5-1 advantage. MVSU pulled within three at 12-9, but Iwunze found two kills in another four-point spurt as Nicholls cruised to victory. Following the event, junior Heidi Carpenter was named to the all-tournament team as she compiled 15 kills, 18 digs, 19 assists and three service aces in three contests.

The Colonels continue tournament play Thursday at the Texas A&M Invitational, facing Missouri State at 4:30 p.m. The Red and Gray will then close with Texas A&M and Pepperdine on Friday at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
