THIBODAUX, La. – Following the Colonels first victory over SFA in nine years, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team hopes to keep its home undefeated streak alive against Houston Baptist University Saturday. Tipoff at Stopher Gym is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
The Colonels (9-7, 2-1 SLC) put together their best wire-to-wire performance of the season on Wednesday against the Lumberjacks, who were the preseason favorites to win the league. Junior
Brandon Moore Jr. continued his hot streak, contributing a team-high 25 points and eight rebounds. Graduate transfers
Jeremiah Jefferson and
Gavin Peppers chipped in 15 points apiece.
Nicholls is 5-0 at Stopher this season, with its most recent victory over SFA showing the potential of this team. The Colonels, despite returning just three student-athletes from last season, are right in the thick of the Southland Conference race, standing in a four-way tie for second after three games.
Nicholls is 6-2 all-time against HBU, including a 3-0 mark in Thibodaux. The Colonels swept the series last season, eking out a 72-71 win on the road before pummeling the Huskies 94-67 in Stopher.
HBU (5-8, 1-1) made waves around the Southland when it knocked off Wake Forest 93-91 in overtime on Nov. 23. In league play, the Huskies' two contests have both gone into overtime. HBU bested Lamar 88-82 and fell to UNO 81-76 on the road.
HBU features one of the most dangerous players in the league in sophomore guard Ian DuBose, who leads the Southland in scoring and was named this week's SLC Player of the Week following his 33-point outburst against the Cardinals.
