THIBODAUX, La. – Led by double-doubles from Bryanna Washington and Cassidy Barrios, the Nicholls State University women's basketball stayed perfect at home with a 77-54 victory Saturday afternoon in Stopher Gymnasium.
The win improved Nicholls record to 9-7 overall and 3-1 in the Southland. The Colonels have won their last 11 games in Thibodaux dating back to last season - all by double figures.
A sophomore, Washington racked up career-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double. She had 15 points in the first half to set a new personal best, helping Nicholls to a 34-28 lead at the break.
The Colonels led at the intermission despite Barrios being held to a pair of free throws. But she contributed with 11 rebounds, five assists and one significant block, which set the career program record at 108. Alisha Allen held the mark of 107, playing from 2009-13. Barrios went on to total 14 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and three steals for her 11th double-double.
Although the Colonels picked up their second 20-plus point victory in as many home games, it wasn't until the third quarter when Nicholls took control. Midway through the period,
Chrystal Ezechukwu (9 points,9 rebounds) scored on a layup for a 48-33 advantage, but HBU (6-7, 1-2 SLC) was able to trim it back to single digits twice including making it a 52-43 game heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Nicholls came out red hot with a 12-3 run over the first four minutes.
Airi Hamilton (14 points, 3 steals) scored twice during the stretch as the Colonels made all six field goal attempts for a 64-46 lead.
Tykeria Williams (9 points) then put the game away with a 3-pointer to stretch the advantage to 21. Nicholls outscored HBU in the fourth, 25-11.
Nicholls shot 47 percent for the game but struggled again from long range at 4 of 17. The Colonel defense held the Huskies to 32.3 percent from the field and 5 of 19 behind the arc. The Colonels dominated on the glass with a 49-33 rebounding advantage.
HBU was led by Amanda Johnson with 16 points, and Sophie Taylor added 12.
