LAKE CHARLES, La. – Winners of five of its last six, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team will face McNeese State University Wednesday at the newly-opened Health & Human Performance Complex at 6:30 p.m.
The Colonels (10-7, 3-1 SLC), chosen to finish 10
th in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll, are currently in a three-way tie for second place. The Cowboys (5-12, 1-3 SLC) are on a three-game losing skid but have played just one league game at home, which resulted in a 73-72 loss to Abilene Christian. The game will feature two first-year head coaches in
Austin Claunch and Heath Schroyer.
Nicholls is coming off a thrilling 77-76 win over Houston Baptist. Sophomore guard
Kevin Johnson hit a go-ahead floater in the final seconds, making five shots and dishing out four assists in the final 14:17.
Considering league play, junior
Brandon Moore Jr. has spearheaded the squad with 17.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, including a career-high 25 points in the Colonels first victory over SFA since 2010. The Lancaster, Texas, native ranks sixth in the league in scoring and field goal percentage and fourth in rebounding.
McNeese's Roydell Brown leads the SLC with eight double-doubles, averaging 11.4 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The Cowboys have four student-athletes with double-figure scoring averages.
Nicholls has won its last four against McNeese, including a 96-79 upending of the Cowboys in Lake Charles last season.
