THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team winds down its five-game road swing with two matchups in Texas, starting Wednesday night against Abilene Christian.
Tipoff in Abilene is scheduled for 6 p.m. The contest will be held at Hardin-Simmons University's Mabee Complex.
Following two straight wins, Nicholls (13-9, 7-3) sits in third place in the Southland Conference standings, trailing first-place Stephen F. Austin by three games. At 7-4, Abilene Christian (14-8) is just a half game behind the Colonels.
The Red and Gray are 2-1 on the road trip, falling to Lamar before knocking off in-state rivals Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans. Nicholls needed overtime to take down the Lady Lions, but led comfortably most of the game at UNO.
Senior do-everything guard Cassidy Barrios did not lead the team in scoring for just the second time this season in the win over the Privateers but finished with her 15th double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Junior post player Chrystal Ezechukwu paced the offense with a career-high 18 points and has missed just four of her last 17 field goal attempts, averaging 14.5 points over the last two games.
Barrios still leads the team in the five major statistics, averaging 20.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.0 steals, and 1.2 blocks. She is just one of a handful of players in Division I to average 20 points and 10 rebounds, and she currently ranks in the top 10 of the Southland in every category.
While the Colonels have won two in a row, Abilene Christian is looking to end a two-game skid. ACU was in the title chase just a week ago before slipping down the standings with losses to then-undefeated Lamar, and Sam Houston State.
The Wildcats are led by Dominique Golightly (14.3 points per game) and Breanna Wright (13.4). The duo headline four players averaging double figures for ACU. Wright is just one of one of four players in the Southland with 100 assists, along with Barrios.
