HOUSTON, Texas – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will aim to finish its five-game road swing with a winning record as the Colonels take on HBU at 2 p.m. Saturday in Sharp Gymnasium.
Nicholls (13-10, 7-4 SLC) fell to 2-2 on the trip following Wednesday's 10-point loss at Abilene Christian, which moved into third place in the Southland Conference standings. The Colonels, who already defeated HBU in Thibodaux earlier the season, are currently in fifth.
In the previous matchup with the Huskies (7-14, 2-9 SLC), the Colonels used a career night from sophomore
Bryanna Washington to pick up a 77-54 win. Washington totaled 19 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double as a Colonel. Nicholls led by double figures heading into the fourth quarter before dominating the final 10 minutes, outscoring HBU 25-11 the rest of the way.
Nicholls will be looking to rebound from its loss at ACU, where they shot 34.7 percent for the game - its lowest since conference play. But the Colonels continue to be one of the nation's best at the free throw line, making 28 of 35 in Abilene. Nicholls heads into the weekend as the No. 13 team in the NCAA in percentage (76.5).
Also in the setback at ACU,
Cassidy Barrios notched her 39th career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Colonels' all-time leading scorer, Barrios reached 1,800 points and is now only 35 from cracking the Southland Conference top 10 list for career points. She leads the league in scoring (20.3 ppg) and rebounding (11.3).
HBU has lost three straight following a 60-59 win over UIW that closed out January. All three of the contests were decided by double figures, including a 77-58 loss at home Wednesday against Central Arkansas.
Amanda Johnson leads the offense at 12.5 points per game. She tallied back-to-back 20-point games before scoring a total of 30 in the last four. She finished with 11 versus UCA and made 5 of 7 from the field.
