THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team won its fourth consecutive game Friday, besting Grambling State University, 6-1, at Ben Meyer Diamond at Didier Field.
The turning point of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning. After allowing an unearned run in the top half, Nicholls (4-1) scored three in one at-bat when sophomore
Dane Simon crushed a first-pitch fastball over the left-field wall for a three-run homer. Junior
Alec Paz walked and sophomore
Austin France singled through the left side to precede Simon's power shot.
The Colonels added three insurance runs later in the game, one in the seventh and two in the eighth. Two scored via balks and the final run came across on a single through the right side by redshirt senior
Brady Bell.
Meanwhile junior
Trever Kilcrease breezed through the Tigers (2-3) lineup, scattering just two hits in six innings and allowing one unearned run. The Panama City Beach, Florida, native struck out eight batters and walked two. Junior
Peter Holland tossed two flawless innings and fellow junior
Zach Autin needed just 10 pitches to seal the victory in the ninth.
Kilcrease earned the win while Nicholls handed Bryan Delgado his first loss of the season. Delgado allowed three earned in six innings. France and sophomore second baseman
Nathan Tribble recorded two hits apiece.
The series resumes Saturday with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at the Did.
