THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's tennis team took the top two lines in singles play against Troy, but the Colonels would fall short against the Trojans with a 4-2 loss Monday afternoon at the Colonel Tennis Complex.

Troy (3-2) won the doubles point with victories on Court 2 and 3 for the early 1-0 lead. After winning at No. 3 in singles and coming just a point away from clinching the match, the Trojans managed to fend off the comeback by Nicholls (2-4).

Marina Vigil started the rally with a straight-set win over Tingting Pei, taking the No. 2 court 6-1 and 6-2. On the top line, Stephanie Barnett dominated in the first set against Matea Mihaljevic before going on to outlast her in the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6).

Mariia Kozachok kept the Colonels alive with a first-set victory at No. 6. At No. 4, Lingfeng Gu fell in the opening set to Chunxi Guo, 6-3. But in the second, Gu took her into a tiebreaker before Guo escaped with a 7-6 (7-5) victory to end the match.

UP NEXT
The Colonels open Southland Conference play on the road this coming weekend, taking on Sam Houston State (March 1) and Stephen F. Austin (March 3).
