SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Nicholls State University women's tennis team earned its first Southland Conference win of the year by taking down UIW on the road Sunday, 5-2.
The Colonels finished the weekend road trip at 1-1 after falling to Abilene Christian on Friday, 6-1. Senior Stephanie Barnett won on the No. 1 court against the Wildcats, which was one of her two straight-set wins for the weekend. Her victory against UIW was one of three singles wins for the Colonels against the Cardinals.
"Today was a solid conference win on the road. I was really proud of our effort," said Greg Harkins, Nicholls tennis head coach. "This is a win that hopefully will give us some momentum as we head into the backstretch of the season."
UIW was short-handed due to injuries, resulting in a forfeit at No. 6 singles and Nicholls would need just one win in doubles to take the point. The victory came on the No. 2 court as Daphne Haverkamp and Mariia Kozachok edged the Cardinals, 7-6 (9-7).
In singles, Marina Vigil had a straight-set win at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4, before Haverkamp but Nicholls a point away from clinching with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win at No. 4. Barnett secured the win and UIW went on to take the final two matches on courts 2 and 5 to make the final.
