Colonels down Lady Demons for sixth straight victory

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Senior Cassidy Barrios recorded her 18th double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead a quartet of Colonels in double figures, as the Nicholls State University women's basketball team won its sixth straight game with an 89-67 victory over Northwestern State Wednesday night in Prather Coliseum.

With the win, Nicholls matched in program's record in overall wins at 19-10, and also in conference at 13-4. The Colonels will have a chance to make history Saturday against rival Southeastern Louisiana. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Colonels pulled away from Northwestern State (10-18, 5-12 SLC) by shooting a staggering 63 percent in the second half. Nicholls stretched a five-point lead with a minute left in the first half to a 46-33 advantage after just a minute in the third quarter thanks to an 8-0 run. The lead stayed in double figures for the rest of the game.

The reigning Southland Player of the Year, Barrios made 7 of 10 from the field and hit 4 of 6 from 3-point range. She poured in 18 first-half points before finishing with her 21st 20-point game of the season.

Tykeria Williams came off the bench for 17 points, six steals, and six assists. Airi Hamilton missed just once on seven field goal attempts and finished with 14 points, while Chrystal Ezechukwu added 10 points.

Nicholls shot 57 percent for the game and nearly recorded its second 90-point game against the Lady Demons this season. In the first matchup on Jan. 2, the Colonels won 97-86, setting a new conference high for points in a single game in program history.

UP NEXT
Nicholls will close out the regular season with a 1 p.m. matchup on Saturday, March 9 against Southeastern Louisiana. The men's game will follow at 3:30 p.m.

SENIOR DAY
Before the game Saturday, the Colonels will recognize their lone senior, Cassidy Barrios. A native of Raceland and graduate of Vandebilt Catholic, Barrios became the program's all-time leading scorer earlier this season and needs just seven rebounds to become only the second Colonel to reach 1,000 for their career.
