NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Nicholls State University men's tennis team played a pair of matches in New Orleans on Tuesday and Wednesday and came back with a split, defeating Loyola-New Orleans, 4-1, before dropping a close 4-3 match against the University of New Orleans on Wednesday.
Against New Orleans, Nicholls (5-14, 0-3 SLC) took the top two courts in singles but dropped three of the remaining matches. UNO did not have a player at 6 so the Colonels claimed the point in the 4-3 loss.
Oleksandr Podgursky defeated Mats Westkamp at No. 1 in three sets, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4.
Tobias Lentz won at No. 2 against Misha Fomenkov, 6-2, 7-5.
After winning the doubles point, UNO needed to win three points in singles for the team win. Two of the matches went down to the wire in three sets, but
Nestor Giribet Lopez and
Moritz Borges lost 6-3 in the final sets.
Against Loyola, Nicholls won in doubles before going on to win the first three completed matches in singles.
Dylan Loru, Lopez and
Alvaro Barranco Vilaltella all won in straight sets. With the match clinched, the coaches elected to play a super tiebreaker at No. 1 with Loyola's Tiger Cheung earning the Wolf Pack's lone point.
