THIBODAUX, La. - Playing in their final weekend at home, the Nicholls State University women's and men's tennis teams came up short against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday as the women fell 4-3 before the men dropped at 4-0 match at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
The Colonels will wrap up the weekend Sunday against Lamar with a doubleheader. The women are set to start at 11 a.m. with the men to follow around 1:30 p.m. Both programs will honor their seniors before the match -
Stephanie Barnett and
Oleksandr Podgursky.
Against the Islanders, the women's team was edged despite another impressive out by Barnett. She and teammate
Lingfeng Gu secured the doubles point at No. 1 before Barnett won in straight sets on the top singles court against Carolina Bulatovic.
Antonia Roessli also had a perfect day, pairing up with
Marina Vigil for a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles. She notched a shutout in the opening set on court 4 in singles before going on to win.
But the Islanders won the first three matches in singles for the lead before Barnett and Roessli tied it at 3-3. The match came down to the No. 2 court with AMCC's Kei Kato escaping with a 7-6 (8-4), 6-3 win over Gu.
On the men's side, the Islanders won courts 1 and 2 in doubles before going on to win three singles matches in straight sets. At No. 4,
Nestor Giribet Lopez had a tough loss in the opening set, 7-5, before his match went unfinished.
