CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Nicholls State University men's tennis team squared off against top-seed Abilene Christian in the opening round of the Southland Conference Tournament and was handed a 4-0 loss Friday afternoon at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Colonels finished the season at 6-16 overall. Abilene Christian improved to 22-4 on the season and will play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday for the championship.
The Colonels were unable to secure a point against the regular season champions for the second time this season, falling in doubles before ACU claimed three straight-set wins in singles.
"All credit goes to Allen Christian, they're just one heck of a team", said Colonel coach
Greg Harkins. "But I do want to say that I'm really proud of the boys, we represented well for the University and it was something for us to build on. Proud of efforts this year, a lot of tough matches but we grew along the way and any coach would be proud of the effort that we put forth."
Highlights in the loss included senior
Oleksandr Podgursky and
Tobias Lentz playing the Wildcats' top duo of Jonathan and Josh Sheehy to a 4-4 tie before ACU won courts 2 and 3 to clinch the point, and
Dylan Loru had a 4-2 lead in the second set against Nikolas Moceanu on Court 3 when the team match went final.
