Matthews, Lord trek to Samford Invite for pentathlon opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Following a strong collegiate debut at the LSU Purple Tiger last week, Nicholls State University freshman Amiya Matthews shifts focus to the first solo act of her young career, traveling east to Birmingham, Ala. alongside assistant coach Courtney Lord for the opportunity to compete in the pentathlon at the Samford Invite, set for Thursday, January 16 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

A four-year veteran of multi events at Sam Houston State, Coach Lord looks forward to seeing Matthews take her first step into one of the track & field's most daunting competitions.

"I am extremely excited for Amiya to open up in her first pentathlon of the season," Lord said. "She's been working hard all fall in order to prepare herself to do these five events and she has shown that she is more than ready to do so. Her dedication and excitement for the multi is what is going to help her excel at this meet."
