Although the 2019-20 season ended abruptly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Colonels ended play still carrying a seven-game winning streak. The streak matches the longest in school history, which has been achieved four times – all under head coach
DoBee Plaisance.
But instead of trying to set the record last season against UIW in the Southland Conference Tournament, Nicholls will now have the added task of ending a lengthy drought against its in-state foe. Tulane has won the 15 consecutive matchups against the Colonels, including a 71-46 win in December of 2018.
Entering her 13
th year at the helm, Plaisance brings her
new-look Colonels to Uptown New Orleans, a place where just across Freret Street she built a dominant Loyola Wolf Pack program. Plaisance is a member of the Wolf Pack Hall of Fame after winning a pair of conference championships before coming to Nicholls.
The Colonels have just three wins in openers under Plaisance, but Game No. 1 is usually on the road against a bigger school. Nicholls has faced two nationally-ranked programs for its opener, highlighted by a matchup against No. 5 Baylor in 2018. Last season, the Colonels fell at Rice which went on to win a second-straight C-USA title.
Long-time Tulane coach Lisa Stockton brings back her leading scorer/rebounder from last year's squad, Krystal Freeman. A first-team all-league honoree, Freeman averaged 15 points and 7.7 rebounds in her junior campaign. The Pineville native racked up 10 points and six boards in the previous win over Nicholls and accounted for two of the Green Wave's 11 blocks.
Members of the American Athletic Conference, Tulane finished 14-17 overall last year and had an even 8-8 mark in conference. One of the victories came against Southland member Central Arkansas in a 65-38 drubbing of the Sugar Bears.
UP NEXT
Nicholls will make its Stopher Gymnasium debut on Wednesday, Dec. 2 against the University of Mobile. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
