THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will make its Stopher Gymnasium debut Wednesday night as the Colonels welcome the University of Mobile for a nonconference matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Nicholls (0-1) began play a week ago at Tulane, falling to the Green Wave, 88-43. The Colonels hung around through the first 10 minutes of the game before Tulane started to pull away for the decisive win.
Sophomore
Chelsea Cain had a solid showing for the Red and Gray on offense, scoring a career-high 16 points while adding four rebounds. Cain scored in double figures four times last year in her freshman campaign.
Adrian Mann also reached double figures in scoring, helped by a perfect night at the free-throw line. Mann connected on all eight attempts and also finished with a team-high three assists.
Nicholls has won its last nine home openers, with their last loss coming to start the 2011-12 season. Three of the victories have been against Division I opponents, ULM twice and Texas Southern, while the other six have been against NAIA programs or Division II.
Mobile competes in the NAIA and was a former GCAC rival of current Nicholls head coach
DoBee Plaisance during her time at Loyola New Orleans. The Lady Rams are 3-0 for the season so far, which does not include a 70-40 loss against South Alabama last Wednesday. Like the matchup against the Colonels, the game counted as an exhibition for Mobile.
D'Mya Ferguson had a double-double in the loss against USA, totaling 14 points and 11 rebounds. For the season, Marquise Cobbs and Lauren Badino are each averaging 13.3 points. Both have 20-point games on the year, with Cobbs pouring in 21 in the win over Dillard.
